NextSource Industries is a UK based start-up within the agri-tech sector, specialising in recycling food waste to create insect-based animal feed. With our innovative agri-tech solutions, we are committed to reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
Currently, one-third of UK food is wasted. NextSource rescues food waste from a variety of local sources, recovering the nutrient value it holds. This is the first step in our innovative process.
Our insect farming operations utilise the unique abilities of the Black Soldier Fly (BSF), one of which being the ability to feed on a variety of food waste and by-products. This allows NextSource to combat the growing environmental concerns around excessive food waste.
Soybean is currently the most widespread protein source in animal feed. Cultivation of soybean causes environmental harm through significant land use contributing to deforestation and land degradation. NextSource Industries provides a sustainable alternative, leveraging innovative techniques for a solution 150 times more space efficient.
One of the key advantages of BSF farming is its ability to drastically reduce land usage. By stacking our production systems vertically, we are able to maximise capacity without requiring large amounts of horizontal land.
Despite an average shipment journey of 8,500km, the UK imports around 3.2 million tonnes of soya per year, 90% of which for animal feed. Sustainable methods to contend this trade practice need to be introduced.
Grown in the UK, requiring less water per kilo, and releasing less carbon emissions means NextSource can produce an alternative feed with a smaller carbon footprint.
At NextSource Industries, we believe in sustainable agriculture. Our mission is to challenge the way the world produces food. By transforming food waste into high-quality animal feed using insects, we are contributing to a more circular and sustainable food system.
The first product being produced by NSI are calciworms. These are dried BSFL that provide a rich source of protein and calcium for birds, reptiles and garden wildlife. Adding them to a bird feeder or scattering them around your garden will attract a number of different types of birds and help to keep them healthy.
